History
The Pappy Van Winkle legacy began over 100 years ago when Julian "Pappy" Van Winkle Sr. started working as a salesman for the W.L. Weller & Sons liquor wholesalers in Louisville. He and a partner bought the company in 1908 and later acquired the A. Ph. Stitzel Distillery in Louisville, which made bourbon for Weller. The two companies merged to become the Stitzel-Weller Distillery, which opened on Kentucky Derby Day in 1935. The distillery was sold after Pappy's death, but his grandson, Julian Van Winkle III, resurrected the brand in the 1980s, sourcing whiskey from other distilleries until he partnered with Buffalo Trace in 2002 to produce the bourbon we know today as Pappy Van Winkle.
